It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our treasured Pam. Pam who is affectionately known as the mother of bird rescue passed away on the 16th of July 2010. Pam was one of the founding members of Auckland Bird Rescue about 30 years ago and has dedicated her life to the care and rehabilitation of birds. She was instrumental in the formation of New Zealand Bird Rescue Charitable Trust and her wealth of knowledge, advice, care and friendship will be greatly missed by all here at NZBRCT. Pam ran the Panmure centre and manned the phones for many many years. Rest in peace Pam we will all miss you very much.
Food and water is presently scarce for birds and other wildlife. Putting out food in your back garden or on top of a fence is a great way to help hungry wildlife at this time of the year. Placing the food in the middle of the lawn is better than near trees or hedges as it gives the birds time to get away from cats.
Some ideas for feeding are:
A good school holiday activity, or if you are feeling creative is:
Melt lard in a saucepan and add anything suitable that you can find in your cupboards - breadcrumbs, wild bird seed, ricebubbles, weet-bix, cornflakes, crushed biscuits etc. In disposible cups secure a longish piece of string or similar to the bottom of the cup with some of the mixture then proceed to fill the cups to the top. Place in the fridge to set. These can then be hung from trees as an awesome source of food for the birds. Another idea is to use half a coconut shell and drill holes in the bottom to thread the string through.
Congratulations to Lyn Macdonald who has received the Queens Service Medal for over 30 years of dedication to bird and animal welfare. This is a much deserved recognition of her service to the care of birds, animals and wildlife. Lyn runs the New Zealand Bird Rescue Charitable Trust's Green Bay Centre and her years of experience and vast knowledge are frequently called on by outside organisations.
